Mackey was a catcher for the NY Mets who soon tired of the every day grind of catching in the major leagues. He then turned his attentions toward his first love: hairdressing. Trading his shin guards and facemask for combs and hair dryers, he founded his own saloon called Sasser's Salon for Men. He followed this up with a line of hair care products Sasser's Salon Products. He has since amassed a worldwide hair salon empire.
